Interview with pin trader Joe

We recently got chatting with Joe about his pin collection, Disney cruises, and more! Hopefully, you’ll enjoy reading about his pin journey!

Thanks so much for chatting with us Joe, can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Joe, I am from Michigan, and I work as a high school special education teacher. I’ve always loved Disney movies and the parks and have many fond memories of visiting Disney World and the Disney Cruise Line. A few years ago, I became a Disney Vacation Club Member, with my home resort being the Polynesian Resort.

We’ve been tempted by Disney Vacation Club before! Would you recommend the Cruise Line?

I absolutely recommended the cruise line! It’s such a different vibe and atmosphere than the parks, but the quality of service you receive is second to none. There are so many fun activities, more intimate character meet & greets, pin trading, and you get to see a little bit of the world!

A few friends and I actually just booked a cruise on the Wish for Summer 2022, and we are beyond excited for it.

That is so cool; fingers crossed you have a blast! When and how did you get into pin trading?

A trip back in 2005 is when I became interested in pin trading.

I was about 11 years old and was obsessed by all the shiny pins cast members were carrying and knew I had to have my own.

Thankfully, pins weren’t too pricey, so my parents were more than happy to have me pick out a few as souvenirs.
Trading at the park was a really fun experience for me too, and while I don’t trade too often now, it was a big motivator getting me into the pin game.

And do you happen to remember your first trade?

I, unfortunately, do not remember my first trade--it was probably 2001, and I was so young. I don’t even have any recent trading memories because I tend to get a little selfish with my pins and typically browse at trading events compared to trading them.

I’m relatively picky about what I trade at events too! What are your main collections, and why?

In 2017 I decided to get more serious about my pin game, and that’s when I would consider my collection actually starting, even though I have had pins from many earlier years.

I typically collect pins for places/resorts/rides that I’ve been to and limited edition pins from Walt Disney World.

I have a lot of pins from Epcot festivals and holiday
themed pins.

We love collecting pins from the resorts we’ve stayed at! What is your favourite Epcot festival?

Food and Wine is my favorite festival, hands down. I love spending the day getting lost at all the food booths, trying all the drinks and foods that you can’t get any other time.

I also ran my first 10k through RunDisney during the Food and Wine Festival back in 2017, where we were able to run through the parks before they opened, which made for such a special experience, so Food and Wine will always be number one to me.

Food and Wine is probably my favourite festival too, even just for the food! How many pins do you have?

I’ve got about 160 pins and am looking to grow continually! I typically visit Disney World once a year and pick up about 10-15 pins each trip.

Very cool, and out of those 160, what is your favourite pin?

My favorite pin would have to be the 2020 Teacher’s day pin. As a teacher, I’m definitely always excited to see some representation, but then with such a rare character that you don’t see too often, it gives me an added appreciation for this pin.

That is a great pin. What do you like most about pin trading?

The thing I like most about pin trading is seeing people’s collections. Some incredibly designed pins are so fun to look at or hear the stories about how someone obtained a certain pin. The pin trading community itself is so supportive and fun to meet as well.

If you could change one thing about pin trading, what would it be?

If one thing could change, I wish Disney itself would host official pin trading events. While people do meetups in the parks, could you imagine a full-blown event? It certainly would be a can’t miss event.

If you could pin trade with any Disney character, who would it be and why?

If I could trade with any character, it would certainly be Stitch. He’s so out there and high energy that I feel like he would have a really neat pin collection.

And our final question. Do you have any advice for someone who wants to get into pin trading?

Advice for anyone looking into getting into pin trading would be first to decide what matters most to you. There are so many pins out there that it could get overwhelming, so first narrow down 3 or 4 characters/places/subjects that interest you the most and start hunting for those. In no time, your collection will grow!

That is some great advice! Thank you so much Joe.
