Interview with Nathan
Today we're happy to share an interview with pin collector Nathan. You can follow them on Instagram (after you've read the interview, of course!)
Thanks for letting us interview you, Nathan. To start, you tell us a little about yourself?
I'm 22 Years old from Gloucester, England! I've been a Disney fan since I was probably about 4. I went on my first Disney trip when I was 3 and have been addicted ever since.
Very cool, and when and how did you get into pin trading?
We flew to Walt Disney World Orlando when I was 6. My sister had gotten herself a lanyard and her first few pins. I, of course, wanted one too, and so my addiction began.
My mum bought me a pink lanyard and a Minnie Mouse Pin for about $7 (ah, the good old days when the exchange rate was good), and I spent all my money on pins that holiday.
Ha, it is so cool that you could have picked up a lanyard that cheap. Does your sister still collect?
My sister doesn't collect anymore. She stopped after her first trip, honestly! (I don't think it was for her.) She still owns most of the pins she bought as more of a keepsake than anything. I'm the collector in the family for sure!
And speaking of collecting, what are your major collections and why?
My Main collections are Stitch, Nightmare before Christmas, Cats and Pua from Moana!
Stitch I started collecting when I was 8. I had just watched Lilo and Stitch for the first time and was OBSESSED (Some things never change!)
Nightmare Before Christmas is my all-time favourite Disney Film.
The other 2 are newer collections that I just started in 2020. I have many, many smaller collections on the go, too, haha.
I'm a big Nightmare Before Christmas collector myself. How many pins do you have?
Ohh, I'd guess around 140 currently? Surprisingly little compared to lots of collectors and traders.
And out of those 140, what is your favourite pin?
My favourite pin is my Pop Century Cast Exclusive Pin from 2018. The Pop Century is our favourite hotel to stay in when we go to Orlando. I was so pleased when I found it.
I love collecting pins from the resorts we've stayed at. What do you like most about pin trading?
I love seeing others peoples collections, and I feel so happy when I can help someone find a pin they were looking for or complete a set they'd been trying to finish for weeks. I love making new friends and being a part of a great community.
And if you could change one thing about pin trading, what would it be?
Scrapper Pins. I know many people don't mind them, I have a few (mainly because I liked the pin), but it really does ruin it when you take all the precautions with trading and end up with a scrapper pin.
Do you have any advice for someone who wants to get into pin trading?
Research! Look into how to recognise scrapper pins, research about hidden Mickey's and stay away from eBay pin bundles (they're usually fake!)
Pick one or two themes and try to stick to them; pin trading is expensive.
The most important one is to have fun though!
We couldn't agree more; the most important tip should always be to have fun!
Thanks so much for answering our questions, Nathan! If you are a pin trader and would like us to interview you, please get in touch.
