Disney Studio Store Hollywood (DSSH)
Update from DSSH with regards to Covid-19 (coronavirus): In response to guidelines issued by LA Mayor Eric Garcetti and to keep our guests and staff safe, we are temporarily closing the Disney Studio Store and Ghirardelli Soda Fountain Chocolate Shop as of March 17th.
We will continue to update you as more information becomes available. Thank you for your support and understanding - we look forward to seeing you soon!
Today we're going to talk about Disney Studio Store Hollywood, or DSSH. I have to admit I was pretty confused when I first heard people talking about Disney Studio Store Hollywood, especially when terms like Soda Fountain, Ghirardelli, and El Capitan were used in the same breath! Are these all the same thing?
I wanted to learn more, and in the process decided to write this article. By the end of reading this, you will know all there is to know about Disney Studio Store Hollywood!
If you spot anything incorrect in this article, or you have something to add, please do add a comment below and we will make sure to include it here.
What is Disney Studio Store Hollywood?
The Disney Studio Store Hollywood is a Disney merchandise location that has partnered with a Ghirardelli soda fountain and chocolate shop. A place where you can buy ice-cream sundaes and Disney pins, heaven! For the rest of this article, we will use the abbreviation DSSH.
Ghirardelli's is a chocolate company with 22 locations across America. The Hollywood location is one of a kind! Disney have partnered with Ghirardelli to sell both Disney merchandise and their regular chocolatey treats.
This is why so many of the pins you see coming out of DSSH are sundae or snack themed.
The other major theme for the merchandise that comes out of DSSH is the El Capitan theatre.
Pin Trader Delight Sundaes
This is an in-store exclusive offering, and cannot be found at any other Ghirardelli location! Purchase a Pin Trader Delight Sundae and receive a limited edition ice cream themed pin, also commonly referred to as PTDs. PTDS are released in sets of three. All three pins will be displayed in their front case, and advertised on Facebook as they are released.
Guests may purchase up to two Pin Trader Delight Sundae pins per day, however, they may not purchase two of the same style of pin.
Pin Trader Delight Sundaes are limited to guests ages four and up. Pin Trader Delight Sundaes pins, when available, are sold daily from Store Opening to Closing.
El Capitan Theatre
I had no idea what this was when I first started pin collecting. The El Capitan Theatre is a cinema located beside the DSSH.
One of the tagline's from their website is "See movies like they were meant to be seen!". And a quick browse around shows that this isn't just a regular cinema. It was converted from a playhouse in 1941 but retained many of the features you'd expect from a classic playhouse.
Disney put on exclusive showings, complete with additional benefits. For example, at the time of writing the latest Star Wars: The rise of Skywalker has just come out. As well as seeing the movie the website states: Guests will enjoy a laser & light show before each screening, photo ops with First Order Stormtroopers and costume exhibits.
The El Capitan Marquee is the inspiration behind DSSH’s popular marquee series. Most films shown at the theatre will have a limited edition Marquee pin created using the film logo and sometimes character art. The marquee series has its own unique backing card, and edition sizes vary from LE150 – LE500.
Here is an example of a pin featuring El Capitan:
Bringing all that together
So the mystery as to why there is a super popular DSSH is because it is right beside a famous Disney owned cinema. It stands to reason then that a lot of the pins coming out of it would be movie industry themed. Not just because they are in Hollywood, but because they are beside this icon of cinema. Here is an example of Judy Hopps eating popcorn.
The partnership with Ghirardelli's makes a lot of sense. Who doesn't want to enjoy a chocolatey snack after going to the cinema? Due to this partnership, it makes sense that many of the pins coming out of the store are snack-based. Like this Pin Trader's Delight Gerald pin.
Where is Disney Studio Store Hollywood?
The DSSH is located right in the heart of Hollywood, next to the historic El Capitan Theatre.
6834 Hollywood Blvd
Los Angeles, California
Their online home appears to be mainly on Facebook.
It is about 0.7 miles from the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, so if you're in the area it would be worth dropping by!
Buying pins from Disney Studio Store Hollywood
There are two ways to buy pins from DSSH. The first is to go into the store physically. Like any shop, they will have pins for sale which you can purchase. Some of their limited edition pins will have limits on how many you can buy.
The more exciting way to purchase pins is online. The DSSH is known for its amazing online pin releases. They are advertised well in advance, well, mostly, they do have surprise releases from time-to-time!
At the time of release, their Facebook page will share a link, clicking on this link will put you into a queue system. You have to wait in this queue system until it is your turn.
When it is your turn, you get redirected to the shop and once in you have a limited time to make your purchases. You can select from the new limited editions. Often you will have the opportunity to buy other pins, such as open editions.
The process is relatively smooth and well explained.
Find out about online releases
The best way to find out about the scheduled releases is to check industry sites (like ours) when we share the monthly release sheets. For example, here is what we shared for the January 2020 DSSH pin release.
To find out the exact link you will need to follow to take part in the releases or to be the first to hear about surprise releases, the best thing to do is sign up to their Facebook page.
How to get to Disney Studio Store Hollywood
The store is located right on Hollywood Boulevard.
If you aren't driving, the easiest way to get there would be to use the Metro Red Line. There is a Red Line subway station located across the street from the El Capitan Theatre in the Hollywood and Highland Entertainment Complex.
Unlike another famous merchandise store, Mickey's of Glendale, Disney Studio Store Hollywood is open to the general public.
